Nature.com recently published a fascinating article on the bacterial community of Quesnel Lake sediment impacted by the Mount Polley Mine disaster.

Upon review of the paper its appears that the sediment at the bottom of the west basin of Quesnel Lake is different from other parts of Quesnel Lake. The paper indicated that they found higher levels of copper in the disaster zone.

The resulting bacteria resembles those which are found typically around tailings and were not found in the non- impacted areas of Quesnel Lake.

Sediment bacteria plays a vital role in the lake bed ecosystem and potentially could be impacting the lake species.
